Falcons have success at two U.P. bridges

Fast facts:

  • A pair of peregrine falcons successfully nested on the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, where the birds have been returning for years, raising three chicks.
  • Another pair of the endangered birds has successfully nested on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge again this year, hatching four chicks.
  • The peregrine falcon has been removed from the federal endangered species list but is listed as an endangered species in Michigan.

Toll increase at International Bridge starts April 1

March 25, 2019 — Tolls at the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie will increase beginning April 1.

The passenger vehicle cash tolls will increase from the current $3.50 (in U.S. dollars) per trip to $4 on April 1. Regular commuters receiving a full discount will see an increase from $2.45 to $2.80 per trip. Commercial rates will increase from $4.50 to $5 per axle. Canadian dollar rates, with equity adjustments, will also change correspondingly. (more…)

Update:  I-75 reopened. 5:20pm.

The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge remains open traffic this morning but, consistent with all other travel advisories, the International Bridge Administration (IBA) is advising drivers use the bridge only for essential travel. (more…)
