Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority (“SSMBA”) is a partnership formed between The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (“FBCL”) and Michigan Department of Transportation (“MDOT”) for the continued management and operation of the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge as a single entity. It establishes the SSMBA as the legal entity to provide operational and policy direction for the management and operation of the Bridge by an administrative unit within MDOT, the International Bridge Administration (“IBA”).

SSMBA is a separate legal entity constituted by MDOT and FBCL to oversee the operation of the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, providing operational and policy direction to the International Bridge Administration (“IBA”) Bridge Director, and for implementation by the IBA. SSMBA is a corporate public body in Michigan as provided in section 7 of the Urban Cooperation Act of 1967, MCL 124.507.

The IBA is a distinct administrative entity created within MDOT as provided in the Urban Cooperation Act of 1967, 1967 Ex Sess PA 7, MCL 124.501 et seq.  The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (“FBCL”) and Owner of the Canadian half of the International Bridge and associated structures in Sault Ste. Marie, as of February 1, 2015, amalgamated with its subsidiary, the Saint Mary’s River Bridge Company (SMRBC).
